Lead Service Lines: What Homeowners Should Know

Did you receive a letter about your home’s water service line? You’re not alone. Communities across Iowa, including Hinton, are identifying lead service lines as part of new EPA requirements.

Lead service lines must eventually be replaced, with most communities working toward a 2037 deadline. One of the biggest questions, however, is who will pay. Federal rules require the replacement of lead lines but don’t specify who is responsible for the cost of the privately owned portion. Depending on the community, the expense may be covered by the utility, shared with the homeowner, or become the homeowner’s responsibility. For today’s buyers and sellers, this is another piece of information to consider when purchasing or preparing to sell an older home.

If you have questions about your property’s service line, contact your local water utility. Staying informed now can help you prepare for any future updates or replacement plans.
