New Regulations with Radon

You cannot see it, smell it, or taste it, but radon may be one of the biggest hidden dangers in Iowa homes.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the soil and can enter homes through cracks in foundations, sump pumps, basements, and crawl spaces. While many homeowners have heard of it, few realize just how serious it can be. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the leading cause among non smokers. In a state like Iowa, where cancer rates continue to be among the highest in the nation, this is a bigger conversation than many people realize.

The scary part? Iowa is considered one of the highest risk states for radon exposure, with all 99 counties falling into the EPA’s highest radon risk category. That means elevated radon levels are not uncommon here. In fact, many homes have it without owners even knowing.

That is why a new law signed by Governor Kim Reynolds is such a major win for Iowa families. On May 19, 2026, Reynolds signed legislation requiring passive radon mitigation systems to be installed in all newly built single family and two family homes in Iowa. The law officially goes into effect on July 1, 2026.

So, what does this mean? Simply put, new homes built in Iowa will now include a system designed to help vent radon gas and reduce harmful exposure before it ever becomes an issue. Installing these systems during construction is also far more affordable than adding them after a home is already built.

This is a huge step forward for homeowners, especially young families, first time buyers, and future generations. A home should be a safe place, and taking proactive measures against something so heavily linked to lung cancer is a meaningful investment in the health of Iowans for years to come.

While this law will not impact existing homes, it is still a great reminder for homeowners to test their properties. Because when it comes to radon, what you cannot see and smell can absolutely hurt you.
